Removal and Replacement Procedures Security Components

This chapter describes the security components for the Convertible Minitower chassis. For an overview of the chassis refer to Chapter 6 “Identifying the Chassis, Routine Care, and Disassembly Preparation.”

ÄCAUTION: When the computer is plugged into an AC power source voltage is always applied to the system board. You must disconnect the power cord from the power source before opening the computer to prevent system board or component damage.

This chapter provides general service information for the computer. Adherence to the procedures and precautions described in this chapter is essential for proper service.

After completing all necessary removal and replacement procedures, run the Diagnostics utility to verify that all components operate properly.

Not all features listed in this guide are available on all computers.

8.1Preparation for Disassembly

See Chapter 6, “Identifying the Chassis, Routine Care, and Disassembly Preparation,” for initial procedures.

1.Remove/disengage any security devices that prohibit opening the computer.

2.Close any open software applications.

3.Exit the operating system.

4.Remove any diskette, compact disc, or MultiBay device from the computer.

5.Turn off the computer and any peripheral devices that are connected to it.

ÄCAUTION: Turn off the computer before disconnecting any cables.

ÄCAUTION: The cooling fan is off only when the computer is turned off or the power cable has been disconnected. The cooling fan is always on when the computer is in the “On,” “Standby,” or “Suspend” modes. You must disconnect the power cord from the power source before opening the computer to prevent system board or component damage.

6.Disconnect the power cord from the electrical outlet and then from the computer.

7.Disconnect all peripheral device cables from the computer.
