Network Con figuration Paramete rs

The followingt opics in this chapter describe some basic netwo rkco nfigurationo n the controller:
l"ConfiguringVLANs" o n page1 08
l"ConfiguringPorts " o n page 114
l"UnderstandingVLAN A ssignments"o n page 117
l"ConfiguringStatic R outes" on page 123
l"Configuringthe Loopback IP Address" on page 124
l"Configuringthe Controller IP Address" on page 125
l"ConfiguringGRE Tunnels" on page 125

Configuring VLANs

The controlleroperates as a layer-2 switch that uses a VLAN as a broadcast domain. As a layer-2 switch, the
controllerrequires an external router to route traffic between VLANs. The controller can also operate as a layer-3
switch that can route traffic between VLANs defined on the controller.
You can configureo ne or more physical ports on the controller to be members of a VLAN. A dditionally, each wireless
client association constitutes a connection to a
virtual port on the controller
, with membership in a specified VLAN.
You canplace all authenticated wireless usersi ntoa si ngleVLAN or into different VLANs, depending uponyo ur
network.V LANs can exist only inside the controller or they can extend outside the co ntrollerthrough 802.1q VLAN
tagging.
You cano ptionallyco nfigurean IP address and netmask fora VLA N on theco ntroller. The IP address is
up
whenat
least one physicalport in the VLAN i s up.The VLAN IP address can be usedas a gateway by external devices;
packets directed to a VLAN IP address that are not destined for the controller areforwarded according to the
controller’sIP routing table.

Creating an d Updating VLANs

You can create and update a single VLAN or bulk VLANs.
In the WebUI
1. N avigate to the Configuration > Network > VLANs page.
2. Click A dda VLAN to create a new VLAN. (To edit an existing VLAN click Edit for the VLAN entry.) See
"CreatingBulk VLANs In the WebUI" on page 109 to create a range of VLANs.
3. I n the VLAN ID field, enter a valid VLAN ID. (Valid values are from 1 to 4094, inclusive).
4. T o add physical ports to the VLA N, select Port. To associate t he VLAN with specific port-channels, select Port-
Channel.
5. (Optio nal)Click the Wir ed AAA Profile drop-down list to assign an AAA profile to a VLAN. This wired AAA
profileenables role-based access for wired clients connectedto an untrusted VLAN or port on the controller.
