Connecting External Options

The information in this section supplements the instructions that come wit external options (SCSI drives, printers, modems, and other serial and pa devices). To connect external options, see the documentation that comes options.

Adding External SCSI Devices

Your server comes with a 16-bit UltraSCSI controller on the system boar provides two independent SCSI channels. This controller has two 68-pin, shie high-density connectors: one internal, on the controller, and one external, back of the server. You can use these connectors to install an additi SCSI device in your server or to attach up to fifteen external SCSI server.

2. Do not exceed the following cable lengths:

Ÿ If

you connect

one

or more Fast SCSI devices to

the

SCSI

control

total

length of

all

cables (internal and external)

must

not

exceed

(9.8

feet).

 

 

 

 

 

ŸIf you do not connect Fast SCSI devices to the SCSI controller,

length of all cables must not exceed 6 meters (19.7 feet).

You

must

set

a

 

unique

SCSI

ID for

each

external

SCSI

device

so

that

can

identify

the

devices. The

controller

can then

 

ensure

that

differe

not

attempt

to

transfer

data

at the same time. Therefore, do not set

for

external

devices

to

the

values

you

used

for

the

controller.

 

 

If

you

plan

to

attach

an

external

SCSI

device,

you might need to ord

SCSI

cable. To

use an

external

device

with

the

Netfinity

5000

server,

connect it

to

the external SCSI connector, using a

 

SCSI

cable. This

SCSI

must

have

 

the

proper

connector

for the SCSI external connector on one

 

the proper connector for the

external

device

on

the

other

end. If

a

come

 

with the external device, or if

it is the wrong type,

order

one. To

select and order the correct SCSI cable for use with

 

device,

your

IBM

reseller

or

IBM

marketing
