Glossary-3
IEEE 802.1w An IEEE standard for the Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP) which is
designed to supersede IEEE 802.1D. RSTP provides considerably faster
convergence for topology changes.
IEEE 802.3 Defines carrier sense multiple access with collision detection (CSMA/CD)
access method and physical layer specifications.
IEEE 802.3ab Defines CSMA/CD access method and physical layer specifications for
1000BASE-T Fast Ethernet.
IEEE 802.3ac Defines frame extensions for VLAN tagging.
IEEE 802.3u Defines CSMA/CD access method and physical layer specifications for
100BASE-TX Fast Ethernet.
IEEE 802.3x Defines Ethernet frame start/stop requests and timers used for flow control on
full-duplex links.
IEEE 802.3z Defines CSMA/CD access method and physical layer specifications for
1000BASE Gigabit Ethernet.
IGMP Snooping Listening to IGMP Query and IGMP Report packets transferred between IP
Multicast Routers and IP Multicast host groups to identify IP Multicast group
members.
Internet Control
Message Protocol
(ICMP) Commonly used to send echo messages (Ping) for monitoring purposes.
Internet Group
Management Protocol
(IGMP) A protocol through which hosts can register with their local router for
multicast services. If there is more than one multicast router on a given
subnetwork, one of the routers is made the “querier” and assumes
responsibility for keeping track of group membership.
In-Band Management Management of the network from a station attached directly to the network.
IP Multicast Filtering A process whereby this switch can pass multicast traffic along to participating
hosts.
LAN Segment Separate LAN or collision domain.
LED Light emitting diode used for monitoring a device or network condition.
Link Segment Length of twisted-pair or fiber cable joining a pair of repeaters or a repeater
and a PC.
Local Area Network
(LAN) A group of interconnected computer and support devices.
