4.12 VAX Compatibility Instructions

Alpha provides the instructions shown in Table 4–18for use in translated VAX code. These instructions are not a permanent part of the architecture and will not be available in some future implementations. They are intended to preserve customer assumptions about VAX instruction atomicity in porting code from VAX to Alpha.

These instructions should be generated only by the VAX-to-Alpha software translator; they should never be used in native Alpha code. Any native code that uses them may cease to work.
