About Splitter Protection
On the ITU side, a fiber pair, with one receive fiber and one transmit fiber, connects to the OADM
module transmitting in the west direction. Another fiber pair connects to the OADM module transmitting
in the east direction. A 2x2 switch module on the line card receives both signals from the trunk fiber
pairs and selects one as the active signal. When a signal failure is detected, the line card switches over
to receive the standby signal. The standby signal then becomes the active signal.
Figure 7-2 shows splitter protection with a 10-Gbps ITU trunk card.
