Check Machine Tightness
Figure 26 outlines the proper sequence and procedur es f or leak testing.
19XL chillers are shippe d with the refrigerant c ont ained in the conden s er sh ell and the oil
charge shipped in the compressor . The cooler w ill have a 15 psig (103 kPa) refrigerant ch arge.
Units may be ordered with t he refrigerant shippe d separately, along wi th a 15 psig (103 kPa)
nitrogen-holding charge in each vessel. T o determine if there are any leaks, the machine sh ould
be charged with refrige rant. Use an electroni c leak detector to chec k all f langes and solder
joints after the machi ne is pr e ssurized. If any leaks are detected, follow the leak t est procedure.
If the machine is spring is o lated, keep all springs bl ocked in both direct ion s in order to
prevent possible pipin g stress and damage dur in g the transfer of refri gerant from vessel to
vessel during the leak test process, or any time refrigerant is transferred. Adjust the springs
when the refrigerant is in op erating condition , and when the water circu its are full.
Refrigera n t Tracer
Carrier recommends th e us e of an environmentally ac c ep table refrigerant tracer for leak
testing with a n electronic de tector or hali de torch.
Ultrasonic leak detect ors also can be used if th e ma c hin e is under pressure.
