Circuit breaker CB2 suppl ies power to the control ce nt er, oil heater, and porti ons of the
starter controls. Circ u it breaker CB3 supplie s powe r to oil pump. Both of these cir c u it breakers
are wired in parallel wit h CB1 so that power is supplie d to them if the CB1 disconnec t is open.
All starters are shipped with a Carr ier control module called the Starter Management Module
(SMM). This module controls and monitors all aspects of the starter. See the Controls section
for additional SMM information. All starter replacement parts are supplied by the starter
manufacturer.
Unit-Mounted Solid-State Starter (Optional)
The 19XL may b e equipped with a solid-state, reduced-voltage starter (Figure 5, Figure 6,
Figure 7). This starter provides on-off control of the compressor motor as its primary function.
Using this type of starter reduces the peak starting torque, reduces the motor inrush current,
and decreases mechanic a l shock. This is summed up by th e phrase ‘‘soft starting. ’’
Two varieties of solid-st ate starters are availa ble as a 19XL option (fact or y s upp lied and
installed). When a unit - m ou nted, optional, solid- s t ate starter is purchas ed with the 19XL, either
a Benshaw, Inc. or Cutler - Ha mmer® solid-state star t er will be shipped with the unit. See
Figure 5 and F igure 6. The solid-state starter’s manufacturer name will be located inside the
starter access door. See Figure 7.
These starters operate by reducing the starting volt ag e. The starting torque of a motor at full
voltage is typ ically 125% to 1 75% of the run ning torque. When the voltage a nd the current a re
