Event System Configuration 349

is possible for it to do so. If it is not possible for 3Com Network Director

to translate the entire object identifier then the remainder will be shown

using numerical values.

Using the example given above, 3Com Network Director translates 1 to

iso, 3 to org, 6 to dod, and so on. It cannot translate any further than

translating 10 to generic, and so the following is displayed:

iso.org.dod.internet.private.enterprises.a3Com.generic.22.2.1.4.1.7.0.4.

11

Collapsed name decode: Collapsed name decode works in a similar

manner to full name decode. However, only the right-most successfully

translated object identifier and any untranslated identifiers following this

are shown.

Using the example from above, 3Com Network Director is able to

translate as far as translating 10 to generic. It then strips off the

preceding iso.org.dod.internet.private.enterprises.a3Com to show:

generic.22.2.1.4.1.7.0.4.11

In addition, the Display octet strings as ASCII checkbox in the Format

section at the bottom right allows you to control whether or not octet

strings should be converted to their textual equivalent or simply displayed

as raw list of hexadecimal codes.

Octet strings are often used to hold ASCII encoded text within SNMP trap

varbinds. Checking this checkbox can simplify the diagnosis of the cause

of an SNMP trap-based event containing such an octet string within its

varbinds.

Event System

This section describes how to configure the events system in order to

restrict the events generated so that only relevant events are logged in

the event system.

Disabling and

If a particular event or set of events is of no interest to you then you can
