Modifying the list of selected switches and ports

The next stage of the wizard lists the switches and switch ports on which the VLAN is to be created and allows you to modify this list. For example, because it is not possible to select unconnected ports on the network map, these can be added at this point in the wizard.

This wizard stage is pre-populated with switches and switch ports, based on the items that were selected on the network map when the wizard was launched. The following rules are used to decide which switch ports are listed in this dialog box:

For each switch in the initial map selection, all ports connected to other switches in the map selection are listed.

For each non-switch in the map selection, 3Com Network Director will find the nearest switch port to the non-switch and add this switch and port to the list.

For each link in the map selection, if either of the devices is a switch, it will be processed using the first rule above. If either of the devices is a non-switch, it will be processed using the second rule above.

To illustrate the second rule, consider the network shown below. If you selected the three end-stations and then launched the Create VLAN wizard, 3Com Network Director would find the nearest switch port to
