400CHAPTER 9: PERFORMANCE REPORTING

4Using your favorite text editor open the System.properties file located within this subdirectory.

5Add (or if the entry already exists, update) the file to include:

options.logging.loggingDir=<NewLoggingDataDirectory>

Where <NewLoggingDataDirectory> is the new location where you want logging data to be stored.

Note that the “:” and “\” characters must be escaped (i.e. preceded) with a “\” character in the System.properties file. For example, to set the logging directory to D:\Data\Logging you would need to update the file to include:

options.logging.loggingDir=D\:\\Data\\Logging

To retain any existing data copy the current contents of your logging directory to this new directory. To facilitate a new log leave it empty. If the directory does not exist, 3Com Network Director will create it.

Missing data within RRD database files

An RRDTool database may contain the value UNKN. This indicates missing data. There are several reasons why this might happen:

You may not have been monitoring the device/link in question at the time.

The monitor corresponding to that data source may not be a valid monitor for the device or link. For example, if a monitored end station does not have an FTP server running on it, the data source for FTP will never record any data.

3Com Network Director may use data gathered using RMON or MIB-II datasources depending on the capabilities of devices at either end of the link. Sometimes RMON does not give the same breadth of values as MIB-II, and vice versa. The values used on the same link can change over time, if one end of the link changes, or becomes unavailable, and the data source is changed.

Empty historical report states 3Com Network Director cannot monitor device/link

Sometimes if you attempt to launch a historical report against a device, or link, the launched report will contain only the statement:

3Com Network Director cannot monitor <name of device or link>

so there is nothing to report.
