516CHAPTER 13: VLAN MANAGEMENT

only those devices and links on which the VLAN is explicitly configured are highlighted e.g. in the figure above, only the switch and the two links would be highlighted.

any devices which 3Com Network Director has inferred are members of the VLAN are also highlighted e.g. in the figure above, 3Com Network Director has inferred that the highlighted end-station is also a member of the VLAN.

See “Options Dialog Box” on page 521.

When you select a VLAN in the Show VLANs toolbar, the map view will zoom to those devices and links that are members of the VLAN. For example, if the map is currently displaying the contents of subnet A and you select VLAN B in the Show VLANs toolbar, if there are no members of VLAN B on subnet A and all members are instead in subnet B, the map view will jump to subnet B.

On a large network that has a lot of VLANs defined, the best way to view the VLANs on the map is to first remove the grouping of devices by subnet, by unchecking the View > Group Map by Subnet menu option, and then launch the Show VLANs toolbar.

Filter View button

The Filter View button on the Show VLANs toolbar behaves as follows:

If the button is depressed, the map view grays all devices that are not part of the selected VLAN.

If the button is not depressed, the map view reverts to the normal view.

The button behaves as a toggle, i.e. one click will cause the button to become depressed, a subsequent click will cause it to pop out again.

The user can thus switch between the VLAN and non-VLAN map views via single clicks of the Filter View button.

Interaction with Trace Path

The Trace Path and Show VLANs toolbars interact as follows:

Both toolbars can be visible and active simultaneously.

Devices are shown grayed on the map if they are grayed by either the Show VLANs toolbar or the Trace Path toolbar.
