700CHAPTER 17: USING 3COM NETWORK DIRECTOR ON A MULTI-SITE NETWORK

Some devices, such as most end stations, cannot be managed directly by 3Com Network Director and so do not have configurable settings for numbers of retries and timeout periods.

Specifying Retries and Timeout Periods in the Network Discovery

Wizard

By default the Network Discovery wizard uses the numbers of retries and timeout periods configured at the whole map level when discovering subnets on your network.

If you are discovering remote sites where the paths to those sites include high latency or unreliable WAN links then the whole map configuration may not be suitable for a successful discovery of these sites. As a result, you may wish to change the timeout periods or numbers of retries respectively for the subnets that correspond to the remote sites that you are discovering.

The numbers of retries and timeout periods can only be altered during a Network Discovery if you choose the Specify subnets option in the Discovery Type step of the Network Discovery wizard. This option allows you to specify the details of the subnets that are to be discovered. The Add Subnet and Edit Subnet dialog boxes, launched when you respectively add or edit a subnet in the list of subnets in the Specify Subnets step of the wizard, both contain a Retry/Timeout information frame that enable the whole map configuration to be overridden:
