Components 517

This reflects what the you would expect - if you ask for a Trace Path view and a VLAN at the same time then you will only see devices that are both in the traced path and part of the VLAN.

However, note that with both views active, Trace Path will not show the path or paths between devices based on the currently viewed VLAN. Trace Path only shows the path or paths based on the physical connectivity of the network, and not based at all on VLAN or L3 information.

Refer to “Trace Path” on page 188 for additional information on this topic.

Maps with no VLAN information

If the current map contains no VLAN information, when the Show VLANs menu option is selected a message will be displayed saying: This map contains no VLAN information. The Show VLANs toolbar will not be displayed.

This can occur for several reasons:

The map was originally created using a version of 3Com Network Supervisor earlier than v3.5.

There are in fact no VLANs configured on the network at all. For example, if the network contains only VLAN-unaware devices such as hubs and traditional routers.

The only VLANs on the network are configured on non-3Com devices. 3Com Network Director does not read VLAN information from non-3Com devices.

If all switches only have the one default VLAN configured, then the following message is displayed: There are no VLANs configured on this network, other than the default VLAN with VLAN ID = 1. As VLANs are not actively being used on this network, the Show VLANs toolbar is not shown.

VLAN names

In the Show VLANs toolbar, the textual description used to refer to a VLAN generally has the following format:

name (ID=xxxx)
