538CHAPTER 13: VLAN MANAGEMENT

Ports with no link connected cannot be selected on the network map. If the new VLAN that you wish to create includes ports that are unconnected, these ports can be selected from within the Create VLAN wizard after it has been launched. See “Modifying the list of selected switches and ports” on page 539.

Entering the new VLAN name and ID

The first step in the Create VLAN wizard is to enter the name and 802.1Q VLAN ID of the new VLAN to be created. This name and ID will be used to create the VLAN on each of the selected switches.

In the VLAN name field, enter a textual description for the new VLAN. Once the VLAN is created, this is the name that 3Com Network Director will use to refer to the VLAN. This value can be up to 32 characters long.

The VLAN ID field will be pre-filled with the first unused 802.1Q VLAN ID. For example, if the switches in your network map were using VLAN IDs 1, 2, 3, and 4, the VLAN ID field would be pre-filled with the value 5. You do not need to accept this default value and can enter any value in the range 2-4094. It should be noted that 1 is reserved for the default VLAN. If you enter a VLAN ID that is already being used by another VLAN on your network, you will be warned of this fact but you are not prevented from creating the VLAN.
