Restricting Access to Printers Connected to a Computer
In some situations, you might want only certain users to print to a printer connected directly to their computer.
For example, if you have a computer in a classroom with a printer attached, you can reserve that printer for teachers by making the teacher an administrator and requiring an administrator’s user name and password to access the printer.
To restrict access to a printer connected to a specific computer:
1In Workgroup Manager, click Preferences.
2Make sure the correct directory is selected and you are authenticated.
To switch directories, click the globe icon. If you are not authenticated, click the lock and enter the name and password of a directory domain administrator.
3Select one or more users, groups, computers, or computer groups.
4Click Printing and then click Printers.
5Set the management setting to Always.
6Click Printer List.
7If it’s a network printer you want the client computer to have access to, select the printer and then click “Add to List.”
8If you don’t want users to access local printers, deselect “Allow printers that connect directly to the user’s computer.”
9To require an administrator password to use the printer, select “Require an administrator password.”
10Click Apply Now.
Setting a Default Printer
After you set up a printer list, you can specify a printer as the default printer. When a user tries to print a document, this printer is the preferred selection in an application’s print dialog.
To set the default printer:
