Option Description Application
hostname Whenyou send a probe packet to
hostname,a message is returned.
Allowsyoutoconfirmthatahostis
activeon the network.
-ghostname F orces the probe packet to go
through the specified gateway.
Allowsyou t otest t he quality of
individualroutes by sending the
packetto the targe t host via various
routesspecified.
-iinterface S pecifies the interface to be used for
sendingan dreceivi ng a probe
packet.
Allowsyou t oe asily check the
secondarynetwork interface.
-n Convertsa host n ame into an IP
addressand then disp lays it.
Allowsyou t o check the IP address
insteadof the host name.
-s ping is repeated at in tervals of 1
second.
Pressingthe [Ctr l] + [C] keys stops
ping,and then displays the statistics.
Allowsyou t o check intermittent or
long-term network events. You can
viewnighttime network events at
onetime by piping the ping o utput
toa file.
-svR Displaysthe routes that probe
packetshave passed thr ough at
intervalsof 1 sec ond.
Displaysthe routes and hop counts
ofprobe packets, allowing you to
comparem ultiple routes to identify
anybottleneck .
