prevent possible pipin g stress and damage durin g the transfer of refrigera nt from vessel to
vessel during the leak test process, or any time refrigerant is transferred. Adjust the springs
when the refrigerant is in op erating condition, an d when the water circuits ar e fu ll.
Refrigera n t Tracer
Carrier recommends th e us e of an environmentally ac c ep table refrigerant trace r for leak
testing with a n electronic dete ctor or halide torch.
Ultrasonic leak detect ors also can be used if the mac hin e is under pressure.
Leak Test Machine
Due to regulations reg ar di ng refrigerant emissi ons and the difficulties as s oc i ated with
separating contamin ants from refrigerant , Ca rrier recommends the fol lowing leak test
procedures. See Figure 28 for an outline of the leak t est procedures. Refer t o Ta ble 5A and
Table 5B for refrige r ant pressure/temperatu re values and to Pumpout and Ref r ig erant Transfer
Procedures section.
Do not use air or oxygen as a means of pressur izi ng the machine. Some mixtures
of HFC-134a and air can u nd er go combustion.
