Mechanic al-Type Star ters
1. Check all field wiring connections for tightne ss, clearance from movi ng parts, and correct
connection.
2. Check the contactor(s) to be sure they move freely. Check the mechanical interlock
between contactors to ensure that 1S and 2M contact ors cannot be closed at th e same
time. Check all other electro-mechanical devices, e.g., relays, timers, for free movement. If
the devices do not move fre ely, contact the star te r manufacturer for rep lac e ment
components.
3. Some dashpot-type m agn etic overload relays m us t be filled with oil on the job s it e. If the
starter is equipped wi th devices of this type, r em ov e the fluid cups from these magnetic
overload relays. Add dashpot oil t o cups per instr uctions supplied with the starter. The oil is
usually shipped in a smal l container attached to the starter frame near th e r ela ys. Use only
dashpot oil supplie d wit h the starter. Do not subs t itute.
Factory-filled dashpot overload relays need no oil at start-up and solid-state overload relays
do not have oil.
4. Reapply starter cont rol power (

not main chiller power

) to check electrical functions. When
using a reduced-volt ag e starter (such as a wye-d elta type) check the tran sition timer for
proper setting. The f ac t ory setting is 30 second s (±5 sec ond s), timed closing. The timer is
adjustable in a range bet ween 0 and 60 seconds and se tt in gs other than the nomin al 30
