Weekly Maintenance

Check the Lubrication System

Mark the oil level on the res er v oi r sight glass, and obser v e th e level each week while the
machine is shut down.
If the level goes below the lower sight glass, the oil reclaim system will need to be checked
for proper operation. If add itional oil is required , add oil as follows:
On hermetic machines, ad d oil through the oil drain c har g ing valve (Figure 3, Item 26.) A
pump is required for add ing oil against refrigeran t pressure. On open-drive machines, oil may
be added through the oil dra in and charging valve (F igu re 2, Item 18) using a pump. Howe ver,
an oil charging elbow on t he s ea l-oil return chamber (F igure 6) allows oil to be add ed wi thout
pumping. The seal oil re tu rn pump automatically t r ans f ers the oil to the main oil res er v o ir. A
pump is requir ed for adding o il against refrig erant pressure. The oil charge is approximatel y
15 gallons (57 L) for EX and FA (size 421-469) style compressors; 20 gallons (76 L) f or EA (size
531-599) style compressors. The added oil

must

meet Carrier’s spec if ications. Refer to
Changing Oil Filter an d Oil Changes secti ons. Any additional oil that is adde d should be logged
by noting the amo unt and date. A ny oil that is ad ded due to oil los s that is not re lated to service
will eventually retu r n to the sump, and must be removed wh en the level is high.
An oil heater is controlle d by the PIC to maintain oil te m per a ture above 150 F (65.5 C) or
refrigerant tempera ture plus 70° F (38.9° C) (see the Co ntrols section) when the compressor is
