Assembled Couplings
If there is room on the shaft betwe en coupling and component to cla mp a sturdy brac ket, the
arrangement illu strated in Figu re 43 may be used. The clamp s must have room to rotat e with
the shaft.
This method is quicker be c aus e the couplings do not ha ve to be disassembled. In addition,
eccentricity or coupling face runout are n ot problems sinc e both shaft s rotate toget her.
When using brackets , t he di ameter in the alignment fo rmula (see Near Final Ali gnment,
Connecting Angular Mis a lignment section) wil l be that of the circle thr ou gh which the dial
indicator rotates.
1. Shut down the machine .
2. With machine at oper at ing temperature, quic k ly in stall brackets.
3. Check that alignmen t is wi thin .002 TIR and .00033 per in. of traverse acros s t he diameter
of measurement. Adju st alignment as requir ed . (Refer to Near Final Ali gnment section.)
4. Remove brackets and run machine until opera ti ng temperature is again reached.
5. Recheck the alignment per steps 1 through 4 unt il it remains within t he specified tolera nces.

Be sure that coupling guards are replaced after these checks.
