If the larger opening bet we en coupling faces is at th e to p, place .072 in. of shim und er eac h
rear foot or rem ove .072 in. from the front footings to bring the co uplings into angul ar alignment
in elevation.
Tighten the holddown bol ts and recheck the net mis ali gnment.
The height of the shaft ab ov e t he footings and the distanc e the shaft extends beyond t he
equipment will not affec t the calculations.
Determine the angul ar adj ustment in plan by the same met hod of calculation. At thi s point,
however, the procedure should include a correct ion for the change in coup lin g gap which
always occurs in adjus ti ng angular alignment . By s ele cting the proper pivot poin t (see
Figure 40), the coupling gap can be kept at the dimension sp ec if ied in the job data.
1. Pivot on the front bolt at t he c lo sed side of the coupling s to sho rten the gap; pivot on the
front bolt at the open side to lengthen it. It may some times be advantageous to pivot half the
required amount on one front footing and half on the ot her.
2. Place a dial indicator ag ainst the rear foot as indic a ted in Figure 41.
3. Place a screw jack on the ot her rear foot to move the equip ment towards the indi c at or.
4. Loosen all holddown bolts except the pivot bolt. Turn the screw jack until the rear end of the
equipment moves again st the indicator by the des ir e d amount.
