To Change the Oil

1. Open the control and oil heater circuit breake r .
2. Drain the oil reserv oir by opening the o il charging valve, (Figure 2, Item 18 or Figure 3, Item
26). Slowly open the val ve against refriger ant pressure.
3. Change the oil filter at t his t ime. See Changing Oil Filter section.
4. Change the refriger ant filter at this time, see the next section, Refriger an t Filter.
5. Charge the machine wit h oi l. The EX uses approximat ely 15 gallons (57 L), for E X and FA
(size 421-469) style c om p ressors; 20 gallons ( 76 L) f or FA (size 531-599) styl e
compressors in ord er to bring the le vel to the middle of the upper sight glass (Figure 2, Item
17 and Figure 3, Item 19). Turn on the power to the oil heater and let the PIC wa r m it up t o
at least 140 F (60 C). Opera te the oil pump manually , t hr ou gh the Control Test, for 2
minutes. The oil l evel should be betw een the lower sigh t glass and one-hal f full in the upper
sight glass for shutdo wn conditions.
Refrigerant Filter
On hermetic machines with EX compressor, a replaceable core refrigerant filter/drier is
located on the refriger an t cooling line to the moto r (Figure 3, Item 29). On FA style machines,
the refrigerant f ilter is located behind the compress or. The filter c ore should be chan ged once a
year, or more often if fi lt er condition indicat es a nee d for more frequent repla cement. Change
the filter with the mach ine pressure at 0 psig (0 kPa) by tra nsferring the refr ige rant to the utility
