To illustrate the use of tildes for character mapping and translation, the Spanish name, “Pe~n~a,” is received from the ECS by ASAI and this name is subsequently translated by the ASAI adjunct to “Peña.” The first tilde in this name turns on character mapping and the second tilde turns it off. It should be noted that the application can only present the translated name to the user if the operating system supports the European and Katakana character sets.
