PPP currently supports the following control protocols:

v AppleTalk Control Protocol (ATCP)

v DECnet Protocol Control Protocol (DNCP)

v Banyan VINES Control Protocol (BVCP)

v Bridging protocols (BCP, NBCP, and NBFCP)

v Internet Protocol Control Protocol (IPCP)

v Internet Protocol Version 6 Control Protocol (IPv6CP)

v IPX Control Protocol (IPXCP)

v APPN HPR Control Protocol (APPN HPRCP)

v APPN ISR Control Protocol (APPN ISRCP)

v OSI Control Protocol (OSICP)

Each end starts by sending LCP packets to con®gure and test the data link. After the link has been established, PPP sends NCP packets to choose and con®gure one or more network layer protocols. After network layer protocols have been con®gured, datagrams from each network layer can be sent over the link. The next sections explain these concepts in more detail.

PPPData Link Layer Frame Structure

PPPtransmits data frames that have the same structure as High-level Data Link Control (HDLC) frames. PPP uses a byte-oriented transmission method with a single-frame format for all data and control exchanges. Figure 27 on page 451 illustrates the PPP frame structure and is followed by a detailed description of each ®eld.
