Chapter 21. Using ATM
This chapter describes how to use the ATMinterface. It includes the following
sections:
v“ATM and LAN Emulation”
v“How to Enter Addresses”
v“ATM-LLC Multiplexing” on page 274
v“ATM VirtualInterface Concepts” on page 274

ATM and LAN Emulation

LAN emulation provides support for virtual Token-Ringand Ethernet LANs over an
ATM network. Refer to “How to EnterAddresses” for a discussion of ATM
addressing.

How to Enter Addresses

Enter addresses in two ways, depending upon whether the address represents (1)
an IP address, or (2) an ATMaddress, MAC address, or route descriptor, as follows:
1. IP address
Enter IP addresses in dotted decimal format, a 4-byte field represented by four
decimal numbers (0 to 255) separated by periods (.).
Example of IP Address:
01.255.01.00
2. ATM or MAC address or route descriptor
Enter ATMaddresses, MAC addresses, and route descriptors as strings of
hexadecimal characters with or without optional separator characters between
bytes. Valid separator characters are dashes (-), periods (.), or colons (:).
Examples of ATMaddress, MAC address or route descriptor
A1FF01020304
or
A1-FF-01-02-03-04
or
A1.FF.01.02.03.04
or
39.84.0F.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.03.10.00.5A.00.DE.AD.08
or
A1:FF:01:02:03:04
or even
A1-FF.01:0203:04
Each type of address requires a different number of hexadecimal characters:
ATM 40
MAC 12
ESI 12
Route descriptor
4
