Monitoring the Mobility Management Entity
Mobility Management Entity (MME) is the key control-node for an LTE access network, which works
in conjunction with NodeB(eNodeB), Serving Gateway, or the LTE/SAW core network. It is responsible
for initiating paging and authentication of mobile devices. It keeps location information at the T ra cking
Area Level for each user and chooses the right gateway during the initial registration process.
The MME uses the SSI-MME interface to connect to an eN od e an d use s t he S 11int e rface t o conn ec t to
a S-GW. In case there is an increase in the signalli ng loa d in t he netw ork, you c an group multipl e MMEs
in a pool to meet this load. It ia also the terminat ion p oi nt i n the net work f or cip he ring /in tegrity
protection for NAS signaling.
MME supports lawful interception of signaling and provides the con trol p lan e funct ion fo r mobi lity
between LTE and 2G/3G access networks with the S3 interface termina ting at the MME fr om the SGSN.
It also terminates the S6a interface towards the home HSS fo r roam ing UEs .
