Command Switch Characteristics
A Cataly st 2950 co mm an d swi tch must m eet th ese r e quireme nts:
•It is running Release 12.0(5.2) WC(1) or later.
•It has an IP address.
•It has Cisc o Discovery Pro toco l (C DP) version 2 e nabl ed ( the defau lt) .
•It is not a command or member switch of another cluster.
•If the Catalyst 2950 command switch is running Release 12.1(9)EA1 or later, it is connected to the
standby comm and switches through the manageme nt VLAN and to the member switches thr ough a
common VLAN.
•If the Cata lyst 2950 comm and swit ch is runni ng a releas e earl ier than Release 12.1(9) EA1 , it is
connected to the standby command switches and member swi tches through its management VLAN .
Note The CMP-NAT-ACL access list is created when a device is configured as the command switch.
Configuring any other access list on the switch can restrict access to it and affect the discovery of
member and candidate switches.
Note • We strongly recommend that the highest-end, command-capable switch in the cluster be the
comm an d s witc h:
– If your switch cluster has a Catalyst 355 0 switch, that switch should be the command switch.
– If your switch cluster has Catalyst 2900 XL, Catalyst 2950, and Catalyst 3500 XL switches, the
Catalyst 2950 sh ould be th e comm an d sw itc h. (The Cat aly st 29 50 LR E swit che s ca n b e t he
comman d s wit ch o f Cata lyst 2 950 m embe r switc hes r unn ing IOS versio n 1 2.1 (11 ) or e arlie r.
– If your switch c luster has Cata lyst 1900, Catal yst 2820, Catalyst 2900 XL, and
Catalyst 3500 XL switch es, either the Catalyst 2900 XL or Catalyst 3 500 XL should be the
comm an d s witc h.
Standby Command Switch Characteristics
A Cataly st 2950 st an dby comm an d swi tch m ust m eet th ese r e quireme nts:
•It is running Release 12.0(5.2) WC(1) or later.
•It has an IP address.
•It has CDP version 2 enable d.
•If the Catalyst 2950 standby command switch is running Release 12.1(9)EA1 or later , it is connected
to o the r sta nd by switches t hroug h i ts mana ge ment V L AN an d to a ll mem ber s wit ches t hrough a
common VLAN.
•If the Catalyst 2950 standby comman d switch is running a releas e earlier than Relea se 12.1(9)EA1 ,
it is connected to the command switch and to other standby command switches and member switches
through its management VLAN.
