Chapter 14 Co n figuring VLANs
Configur ing Normal-R ange VLANs

Configuring Normal -Range VLANs

Normal- range VL A Ns are VL ANs with VLA N I Ds 1 to 1005 . If the sw it ch is in VT P server or
transpare nt mod e, y ou ca n a dd, modi fy or r e move configurat ions for VL ANs 2 to 10 01 in t h e V LAN
database . (V L AN ID s 1 and 10 02 to 1 005 are aut om atic ally cre ate d and ca nnot be rem oved.)
Note When the switch is in VTP transparent mode and the EI is installed, you can also create extended-range
VLANs (VLANs with IDs from 1006 to 4094), but these VLANs are not saved in the VLAN database.
See the Configuri ng Extend ed-Ran ge VLAN s se ction on pa ge 14-12.
Configurations for VLAN IDs 1 to 1005 are written to the file vlan.dat ( VLA N d ata ba se), an d y ou can
display them by e nte ring t he show vl an privileged EXEC command. The vlan.dat file is stored in
nonvolatile RAM (NVRAM).
Caution You can cause inconsistency in the VLAN database if you attempt to manually delete the vlan.dat file.
If you want to modify the VLAN conf iguration, use the commands described in these sections and in the
command reference for this release. To change the VTP configuration, see Chapter 15, Configuring
VTP.
You use the interfa ce configura tion mod e to define the port mem bership mode and to add and rem ove
ports from VLANs. Th e results of these commands are writte n to the runni ng-conf iguration f ile, and you
can displa y the file by entering the show running-config privileged EXEC command.
You can set these parameters when you cr eate a new normal-range VLAN or modify an existing VLAN
in the VLAN database:
VLAN ID
VLAN name
VLAN type (Ethernet, Fiber Distributed Data Interface [FDDI], FDDI network entity title [NET],
TrBRF, or TrCRF, Token Ring, Token Ring- Net)
VLAN state (active or su spended)
Maximum transmission unit (MTU) for the VLAN
Security Association Identifier (SAID)
Bridge identification number for TrBRF VLANs
Ring number fo r FDDI and TrCRF VLA Ns
Parent VLAN number for TrCRF VLANs
Spanning Tree Protoc ol ( STP) type for TrCRF VLANs
VLAN n umb er to use whe n tra nsla ting f rom o ne V L AN type to an othe r
Note This section does not provide configuration details for most of these parameters. For complete
inform ation on the comma nds and para meter s that con trol VLA N configuratio n, refe r to the co mmand
refere nce fo r thi s r ele ase.
