Token Ring VLANs

Although the switch does not suppo rt Token Ring connect io ns, a remote device such as a Catalyst 5000
series switch w ith Token Ri ng c on nect ion s coul d be m ana ged from o ne of t he supp orte d swit che s.
Switches r unn ing VTP ver sion 2 adverti se i nfor matio n abo ut these Token R in g VL AN s:
Token Ring TrBRF VLANs
Token Ring TrCRF VLANs
For more information on configuring Token Ring VLANs, refer to the Catalyst 5000 Series Software
Configuration Guide.

Normal-Range VLAN Configuration Guidelines

Follow these guidel ines wh en creat ing and mo difyin g norma l-rang e VLANs in your network:
See Table 14-1 for the maximu m number of supp orted VL ANs per swit ch model. On a switch
supporting 250 VLANs, if VTP reports that there are 254 active VLANs, four of the active VLANs
(1002 to 1005 ) are re served for Token Rin g and FDDI.
Normal -ra nge VL ANs a re id ent ified w ith a n umb er b etw een 1 an d 1001 . VL AN nu mber s 10 02
through 10 05 are rese rved for Toke n R ing an d FD DI VLA Ns.
VLAN c on figuration for VLA Ns 1 t o 10 05 ar e always saved in the VLA N da tab ase. If V TP m ode
is transparent, VTP and VLAN configuration is also saved in the switch running configuration file.
The sw itch al so sup por ts V L AN ID s 1 006 thr ough 4 094 in V TP tr anspa rent m ode (VTP di sable d)
when the EI is install ed. These are extended- range VL ANs and co nfiguration options ar e limi ted.
Extended-range VLANs are not saved in the VLAN database. See the Configuring
Extended-Range VLANs section on page 14-12.
Before you ca n c rea te a V LAN , the s witc h m ust be in V TP ser ver mo de or VT P tra nsp aren t mode.
If the switch is a VTP server, you must define a VT P doma in or VTP will not fu nction.
The sw itch doe s not supp ort Token Ri ng or FD DI m edi a. T he swit ch d oe s no t fo rward FDD I,
FDDI-Net, TrCRF, or TrBRF traffic, but it does propagate the VLAN configuration through VTP.
