Configuring the Switch Priority

You can configure the switch priority and make it more likely that the switch will be chosen as the root
switch.
Note Exercise care when using this command. For most situations, we recommend that you use the
spanning-tree mst instance-i d ro o t p r im a r y an d the spanning- tree mst instance-i d root secondary
global con figura tion co mm an ds to m odify t he s wi tc h p rior ity.
Beginning in privileged EXEC mode, follow these steps to configure the switch priority:
To return the switch to its default setting, use the no spanning-tree mst instance-id priority global
configurati on comm a nd.

Configuring the Hello Time

You can configure the interval between the generation of configuration messages by the root switch by
chan ging the hello tim e.

Command Purpose
Step 1 configure terminal Enter glob al con figuration mo de.
Step 2 spanning-tree mst instance-id priority priority Configure the switch priority for an MST instance.
For instance-id, the range is 0 to 15.
For priority, the range is 0 to 61440 in increments of
4096; t he d efa ult i s 3 276 8. The l ower the num be r, the
more likely the switch will be chosen as the root switch.
Valid pri orit y values are 0, 409 6, 819 2, 12 288 , 16384,
20480, 24 576 , 286 72, 3 2768 , 36864, 4 096 0, 45056,
49152, 53 248 , 573 44, a nd 61 440. A ll o the r values ar e
rejected.
Step 3 end Return to privileged EXEC mode.
Step 4 show spanning-tree mst instance-id Verify y our ent rie s.
Step 5 copy running-config startup-config (Optiona l) Save your entries in the co nfigurati on file.
