Configuring Ports to Carry Voice Traffic in 802.1Q Frames

Beginning in privileged EXEC mode, follow these steps to configure a port to carry voice traffic in
802.1 Q fram es for a speci fic VLAN:

switchport voice vlan none interface configuration command.

Configuring Ports to Carry Voice Traffic in 802.1P Priority Tagged Frames

Beginning in privileged EXEC mode, follow these steps to configure a port to instruct the IP phone to
give voice traffic a higher priorit y and to fo rward all tra ffic through t he native VLAN.
To return the port to its default setting, use the no switchport voice vlan interface configuration
command.
Command Purpose
Step 1 configure terminal Enter gl obal configura tion mode.
Step 2 int er fa ce interface-id Specify the interface connected to the IP phone, and enter interface
configura tion mode.
Step 3 switchport vo ice vlan vlan-id Instruct the Cisco IP phone to forward all voice traffic through the specified
VLA N. B y d efa ult, th e Ci sc o IP p hone for wards th e voice tr affic with an
802.1Q prior ity o f 5.
Valid VLAN IDs are from 1 to 4094 when the enhanced software image (EI)
is installed and 1 to 1001 when the standard software image is installed. Do
not enter leading zeros.
Step 4 end Return to privileged EXEC mode.
Step 5 show interfaces interface-id
switchport Verify your voice VLAN entries.
Step 6 copy running-config startup-config (Opti onal) Save your entries i n the configurat ion file.

Step 3 switchport voice vlan dot1p Instruct the swit ch port to use 802.1P priority tag ging for v oice traf f ic and to
use the default native VLAN (VLAN 0) to carry all traffic. By default, the
Cisco IP phone f orward s t he voice t raffic with a n 8 02.1P pri ori ty o f 5.
Step 4 end Return to privileged EX E C m ode.
Step 5 show interfaces interface-id
switchport Verify your voice VLAN entries.
Step 6 copy running-config startup-config (Optional ) Save your entries in the configurati on file.
