Configuring MVR

MVR Configuration Guidelines and Limitations

Follow these guidelines when configuring MVR:
Receiver ports cann ot b e t runk p ort s. Re ceiver port s on a sw it ch c an be in d i fferent VL AN s, but
should not belong to the multicast VLAN.
The maximum number of multicast entries that can be configured on a switch (that is, the maximum
number of t elevision channel s that can be re ceived) is 256.
Each channel is one multicast stream destined for a unique IP multicast address. These IP addresses
cannot alias between themselves or with the reserved IP multicast addresses (in the
range 224.0.0.xxx).
Note For complete syntax and usage informat ion for the commands used in th is section, refer to the command
refere nce fo r thi s r ele ase.

Configuring MVR Global Parameters

You do n ot need to set the opti onal MV R paramet ers if you choose to use the default settings. If you do
want to change the default parameters (except for the MVR VLAN), you must first enable MVR.
Beginning in privileged EXEC mode, follow these steps to configure MVR parameters:
Command Purpose
Step 1 configure terminal Enter glo bal configur ation m ode .
Step 2 mvr Enable MVR on the switch.
Step 3 mvr group ip-address [count] Confi gure a n IP mul ticast ad dress on the switch or use the count parameter to
configure a contiguous series of MVR group addresses (the range for count is
1 to 256; the def ault is 1). Any mult icast data sent to this address is sent to all
source ports on the switch and all receiver ports that have elected to receive
data on tha t multica st address. Each mul ticast addr ess would corr espond to
one television ch anne l.
Note E ach IP address tr anslates to a multicast 4 8-bit MA C add ress. If an IP
address be ing configured transla tes (alias es) to a previously
configured MAC addres s or to any res er ved m ultic as t M AC
addresses, the command fails.
Step 4 mvr q ueryt ime value (Optional) Define the maximum time to wait for IGMP report memberships
on a recei ver port before removing the port from multicast group membership.
The value is in units of tenths of a second. The range is from 1 to 100 and the
default is 5 tenths or one -half sec ond.
Step 5 mvr vlan vlan-id (Optional) Specify the VLAN in which multicast data is received; all source
ports must belong to this VLAN. The VLAN range is 1 to 4094.
The default is VLAN 1.
