Chapter8 Network Optimization Commands Identifying Physical and Logical Elements
Identifying Physical and Logical Elements
The Private Network-to-Network Interface (PNNI) control protocol and the ser v ice m o du l es u s e
different formats to identify the s ame entity. For example, the format of a logical por t th at y ou enter on
an AXSM is different from the format you would enter on the PXM45. This section describes these
formats in the PNNI and AXSM contexts and how the y corre spo nd to each othe r. The parallel actions of
configuring or displaying logi cal el ements on different cards is broa dl y ill u s tr ate d in t h e Ci sco
MGX 8850 Routing Switch Software Configuration Guide, Release 2.0.
Apart from the way PNNI and th e l ower l evels of logic identify the same ele ment, the sequence of
commands also needs explanatio n. When you configure logical portsfor just one exampleyou must
complete certain tasks on the AXSM CLI before or after relate d PNNI tasks. For certain command s, this
manual lists prerequisite commands or tasks. For mor e details on the sequence of tasks, refer to the Cisco
MGX 8850 Routing Switch Softwa r e Co nf igu r ati on Gui de, Release 2.0, for more details of this sequence.
AXSM Format
On a service module, you identify the foll ow w he n you provision the ca pa bilities of the card:
Slot
Bay
Line
Logical port
Port group
Resource partition
Not all of these elements corre spo n d to el em en t s yo u sp eci fy o n th e P XM 4 5 . Su bse quent paragraphs
describe only the common elements t hat are visible on the CLI of the PXM and the service module. The
preceding elements are further de fined i n th e Cisco MGX 8850 Routing Switch Software Configuration
Guide.
For a UNI or NNI, one logical interface (or logical port) exists per physical line. For virtual network to
network interfaces (VNNIs), y ou can co nfi gure mu ltiple ports o n a line . The max imum n umber of logica l
ports on an AXSM is 60 regardless of the AXSM model or the number of lines on the back cards. The
range of logical port numbers is 1 60 for an AXSM regardle ss of whether the interface type is UNI, NNI,
or VNNI.
