Configure Route Optimization
Configure periodic rou te optimization to impr ove ba ndwidth utilization. T h is t ype of optimization i s a
type of connection grooming. To automate route optimiz ation, cnfrteopt lets you specify an inte rval
between new optimizatio n cyclesevery 2 hours, for example. (To forc e immedi ate rout e opti mizat io n,
use the optrte command.)
You can choose a time period for optimization so that disruption is minimal. For example, you could
specify that the switch starts grooming a range of SPVCs for one hour at midnight. Note, however, that
route optimization is a background process and does not attempt to optimize all possible connections at
once. The load created by route o p tim ization is extremely small and ca nn o t c aus e congestion.
The nature of SPVCs provides a reason for periodic grooming: during the course of daily operation,
better routes may becom e availa bl e. The determining factor for a better route is the maximum cost
(maxcost). See the addcon description for details about the maxcost parameter. The PNNI protocol
identifies this maximum c ost by another name: administrative weight (AW).
Note If you do not specify a maxcost with either the addcon or cnfcon command, the routing protocol uses
the AW on only forward links to calcul ate a new route for the connection. If th e c on n ect io n ha s a
specified maxcost, the ro utin g pr oto col c a lcul ate s po ss ibl e rou tes b y us in g the AW in both directions.
Usage Guidelines
Note the following characteristics of route optimization:
Within a range of connections, the cnfr teopt command applies to only the master end poin ts. The
slave endpoints are not processed by cnfrteopt.
Route optimization applies to only routed connections. The switching fabric does load comparison
between the routing cost of a c on n ect io n 's cu r r en t r o ut e an d th e new, potenti al , b est ro u te.
By default, the PXM45 calcula tes that a route is better if its ro ut in g cost is 30% less than the curr en t
cost. You can change this cost threshold thro u gh th e cnfrteoptthld command.
The following briefly characterizes t he defaults for cnfrteopt:
The default state is disabled.
If you do not specify a range, a ll connections on the port are su b jec t to optimization.
If you not specify an interval, optimization begins every 60 minutes.
If you do not specify a tim e of day, the default is any time du ri ng t he day (but still subject to th e
interval of minutes between optimization commencement).
