Configure Alarm
Configures statistical alarm th re sho ld s f o r a l in e. T he configurable items for SON ET a nd PL CP are
defined in RFC 2258. The configurable items for DS3 and E3 are defined in RFC 2496. The items that
constitute a configuration are:
Line type: SONET, DS3, E3, or PLCP
Tested layer: section, line, or path (for example, SONET line)
Test periods of 15 minutes and 24 hours
Degrees of error-time: errored seconds and severely errored seconds
Types of errors, including f ra ming errors, code vi ol a t io ns , and unavailable
Severity of alarm trigge r ed when a threshold is cr os s e d: minor or major
A keyword identifies the alarm crit eria. Each keyword identifies the tested la ye r (line, and so on), the
type of threshold (errored seconds, and so on), and the test period of 15 minutes or 24 hours. For
example, -lnes15 indicates the number of errored second s on th e line laye r du ring a n y 15 min ute pe riod .

The required parameters are the line type the line identifier in the format bay.line, and the severity of
the alarm (minor or major). All other parameters are option al and must be preceded by the keyword that
identifies the type of parameter.

Generic Syntax Descr i ption

The generic syntax is.
cnfalm <line type> <bay.line> <alarm severity> <thresholds>

line type The line type is specified as one of the following keywords (including the hyphen):
-sonetsec (for SONET section)
-sonetline (for SONET line)
-sonetpath (for SO N ET p a t h)
-ds3
-e3
-plcp
bay.line Identifies the bay (1 or 2) and the number of the line. The range for line can be 1 to
the highest numbered line on the back card.
