Service Profile Templates

Witha service profile template, you can quickly create several service profiles with the same basic parameters,
suchas the number of vNICsand vHBAs, and withidentity information drawn from the same pools.
Ifyou needonly oneservice profile with similar values to an existing service profile, you can clone a
serviceprofile in theCisco UCS Manager GUI.
Tip
Forexample, if youneed severalservice profiles with similar values to configure serversto host database
software, you cancreate a service profile template, either manually or from anexisting service profile. You
thenuse the template to create the service profiles.
CiscoUCS supports thefollowing types of serviceprofile templates:
Initialtemplate
Serviceprofiles created froman initial templateinherit all the properties ofthe template. However,
afteryou create the profile, it is no longer connected to the template. If you need to make changes to
oneor moreprofiles created from this template, you must change each profile individually.
Updatingtemplate
Serviceprofiles created from an updating template inherit all the properties of thetemplate and remain
connectedto the template. Any changes to the template automatically update the service profiles created
fromthe template.
Policies
Policiesdetermine how CiscoUCS componentswill act in specificcircumstances. You can create multiple
instancesof most policies. For example, you might want different boot policies, so that some servers can PXE
boot, some can SAN boot, and others can boot from local storage.
Policiesallow separation of functions within the system. A subject matter expert can define policies that are
usedin aservice profile, whichis created by someonewithout that subject matterexpertise. For example, a
LANadministrator can create adapter policiesand quality of servicepolicies for the system. These policies
canthen be used in a service profile that is created by someone who has limited or no subject matter expertise
withLAN administration.
Youcan create and use two types of policies in Cisco UCS Manager:
• Configuration policies that configure the servers and other components
• Operational policies that control certain management, monitoring, and access control functions
