Provisioning ISDN BRI Service

Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) Basic Rate Interface (BRI) operates at 144,000 bits per second and is designed for desktop service. ISDN BRI is also referred to as 2B+D because it provides two Bearer channels (B1 and B2) at 64 kilobits per second, plus one D channel for signaling at 16 kilobits per second.

ISDN BRI settings and status depend on the mode.

￿￿3DS0 Mode transports each ISDN BRI as three DS0s, one each for the B1, B2, and D channels. These DS0s are provisioned as digital crossconnects between groom and drop DS0s. The DS0 Type must be set to Data. No special ISDN commands are used.

￿￿4:1 TDM Mode transports each ISDN BRI as 2.25 DS0s, one for each B channel and 0.25 for the D channel by multiplexing four D channels onto one DS0. This mode can efficiently carry 4 BRIs using only 9 DS0s. This mode works with GR-303 switch interfaces, using a fixed connection for the D channel and dynamically connecting the two B channels when needed.

The Access Navigator DCS supports ISDN BRI service (also called 2B+D) using the 3DS0 mode, in which the two Bearer channels (B1 and B2) and a signaling channel (D) are crossconnected as three DS0 data channels.

For ISDN BRI service using GR-303, see Provision ISDN BRI 4:1 TDM Service to Subscribers on page 10-25.
