Performance Manageme nt and Historical Data

An important component of efficient network management is the ability to collect and analyze
perform an ce in for mat ion in a la rge net work o f many devices. T his p er forma nce i nform at ion can a ssist
you to pr o-ac tively manage yo ur net work e lem en ts, a nd tro uble sho ot ne twor k p robl ems.
This chap ter describes the Cisco EMF Performa nce Manager applica tion that is used in conjunction with
the Cisco 120 00/10720 Router Mana ger applic ation to view perform ance stat istics from t he Cisco
12000/10 720 Rout ers m ana ged o n y our networ k.
Performance Manager collects historical performance data for interfaces and GRPs. You can only view
performance i nformation in Performance Manager if pe rformance logging is swit ched on. Performance
Manager is a powerful, flexible tool that enables you to view general and performance specific attributes
in one application and in a variety of formats (for example, graphs and tables). You define the attributes
or para met ers, choo se the ob jec ts y ou want t o vi ew, select the dat e a nd time of the v iew, and se t th e
summary interval.
Performance logg ing can be switched on/of f globally (that is, for all modules and interf aces belo w these
modules ) from the Chassis Configurat i on window. See Star ting Global Performance Logging section
on page 4 -9 or Stoppin g Global Per forma nce Loggi ng sect ion on page 4-10 for fu rthe r det ails .
Module p er forma nce log ging ca n be sw itch ed o n/ off on a p er m odu le basis fr om t he M od ule
Performa nce window. Switching performa nce logg ing on for a sele cted modul e also switch ed
perform an ce lo ggi ng on f or the int erfac es and VLA N su b- inte rfaces on t he mo dul e. See St arting or
Stopping Pe rf orma nce Lo gging sect ion on page 5-10 for fu rther deta ils.
VLAN sub-interfaces or interface performance logging can be switched on/off on a per interface basis
from the Generi c Interfa ce Per formanc e window. See Starting Per forma nce Logg ing f or a Se lect ed
Interface section on page 10-5 for fu rt her de tail s.
Performance Manager collects data for all different technologies on an interface. Fo r example, if you
want to view Performance Manager data for an ATM interface, performance attributes are listed for
Gener ic and SO N ET tec hno logi es , bec a use b ot h appl y to ATM interface s.
Performance information in Cisco 12000/10720 Router Manager application can be viewed in two ways:
1. Using Per formanc e Manag er to displa y historic al data as w ell as curre nt data in the form of a lin e
chart, bar chart, or table.
2. Using th e Interfa ce Perfor mance w indows option to view curre nt data in a raw numerica l format .
