IP Auto Discovery of the Cisco Chassis

Auto discovery is the appl ication t hat discovers existing Cisco 12000/10 720 Router s, saving time and
effort.
The au to discovery window can be ope ned from th e Viewer or Discovery icon in the Launchpad. For
furthe r in for mat ion, r efer to the Cisc o Element Managemen t Framework U ser G uide .
The Auto discovery application has three mechanisms for discovering chassis:
IPICMP ping s a re u sed to find chassi s in a given IP ad dr ess ra nge. T his finds whi ch I P d evices
exist, but does not discover what kind of device they are.
SNMPSNMP get requests are used to find chassis in a given IP address range. Several SNMP
communi ty stri ngs can be use d so tha t e qu ipment wi th differen t c omm unity st ring s can b e
discover ed in the same discove ry session. The SNMP infor mation returned by devices is use d to
work ou t wh at kin d of device has bee n f oun d.
IP and SNMPICMP pings are use d to find chassis and then SNMP request s are used to interr ogate
the chassis to find out what kind of chassis they are. This is the default mechanism.
Auto d iscovery can d isc over chassis on more than one subne t work using multi-hop discovery. It can be
scheduled to run at preset times (the Cisco Element Management Framework User Guide detail s how to
set the schedules ).
After th e chassi s is detect ed, an object rep resen ting the chassi s is created and plac ed unde r the site f rom
which auto discovery was launched. A map of the chassis is also created, as shown in Figu re 3-21 on
page 3-26.
Note If you wish to auto -discover a chassis that can be man aged by Cisco 12000/ 10720 Router
Manager, then the Physi ca l Path o pti on must b e ena ble d and an appr opr iate Physic al Path
(termin ated with a Site) must be selected. Provided this is done, the auto discovery
application will create a chassis below the selected Physical Path for each discovered
chassis.
