Functional Notes

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) allows interfaces to acquire a dynamically assigned IP address from a configured DHCP server on the network. Many Internet Service Providers (ISPs) require the use of DHCP when connecting to their services. Using DHCP reduces the number of dedicated IP addresses the ISP must obtain. Consult your ISP to determine the proper values for the client-idand hostname fields.

Usage Examples

The following example enables DHCP operation on Ethernet interface 0/1:

(config)#interface eth 0/1 (config-eth 0/1)#ip address dhcp
