For the background ac tions described below, the terminal will be download ed
automatically if a download retr y flag for the terminal is set in software. This flag is
set at the time translation is loaded at b oot time, when translation which affec ts
the parameters of a terminal is cha nged as part of system administration actions,
and when a port is inserted in software as a result of board insertion or trans lation
change.
Automatic Download Actions
1. System Reboot/Restart
A global download action is started when period ic maintenance tests start
after a system reboot/restart regardless of whether the parameters have
been downloaded previously.
2. Periodic Tests
If the download flag is still set wh en periodic tests are run on a termi nal, a
download action will oc cur. This operation is required in case a terminal
could not be d ownloaded previously b ecause it was off-hook at the time
the system first booted or b ecause the terminal was off-hook at the time
translation associated with d ownloadable parameters was changed.
Note that it may take more than an hour for periodic tests to reach the
terminal that needs to be d ownloaded.
3. Terminal Administration
A downloadable terminal is automatically downloaded when translation
changes associated with downloadable parameters are made as part of
system administration. As shown in Table 10-128, these chang es can be
for a specified termi nal or may be system-wide. If the c hange is for
system-level parameter, a bac kground global up date request is made to
download all programmable terminals.
This global update may take more than an hour for a system with several
thousand programmable terminals.
4. Port Insertion
Whenever maintenance software initiates a request to p lace a port into
service, a terminal download action is started on that term inal if that
terminal is programmab le. This port insertion action oc curs under the
following circumstances:
a. A digital line circ uit pack that is physic ally inserted into the system
has ports currently administered for programmable terminals.
If more than 20 port insertion requests are rec eived within a few
seconds, a glob al download request is started up as a backg round
task. This action updates all p rogrammable terminals ins tead of just
those being inserted . This is done to avoid system overload fo r
situations where there is massive board insert ion.
