The EPN Maintenance circuit pack must b e physically inserted into the
dedicated s lot marked Maintenance in the A ca rrier of the EPN. The serial links
from the EPN Maintenance circuit pac k to the Expansion Interface circuit packs
are physically connec ted from this dedic ated slot to slots 2A01 and 2B02 (2B02
is used only if there is duplic ated Port Network Connectivity). The serial link from
slot 2A01 to the maintenance slot is hard-wired into the backplane of c arrier A,
whereas the serial link from slot 2B02 to the maintenance slot is a rib bon cable
connecting the two slots. The serial link from the EPN Maintenance c ircuit pack to
the terminal is also a ribbon cable which pl ugs into a connector lab eled TERM on
the back of carrier A.
The maintenance strategy for the EPN Maintenance circ uit pack consists of
checking the integ rity of the communications p ath to/from the EPN Maintenance
circuit pack, tes ting individual hardware c omponents on the EPN Maintenance
circuit pack, and keeping the alarm LED s up-to- date. The individual hardware
components includ e the serial interfaces which hand le the serial links connected
to the EPN Maintenance circuit pac k. There are three serial interfaces, one for
each possible Expansion Int erface circuit p ack and one for the terminal.
Since the EPN Maintenance circuit pack sup ports environmental maintenance in
the EPN, trouble with the EPN Maintenance circuit pac k can cause environmental
maintenance to falsely detec t problems. In a multicarrier c abinet EPN, these
environmental MOs include: POWER (Battery & Battery Charger), CARR-POW
(Carrier Port Power Unit), AC-POWER (AC Power), CABINET (Cabinet Sensors),
EMG-XFER (Em erge ncy Tran sfer) , EXT-DEV (Ex terna l Devi ce Al arm), and
CUST-ALM (Customer-Provided Alarming Device). In a sing le carrier cabinet
EPN, these environmental MOs include DC-POWER (Single Carrier Cabinet
Power) , EMG-XFER ( Emerg ency Transfer ), EXT-DEV ( Extern al Dev ice A larm ),
and CUST-ALM (Customer-Provided Alarming Devic e).
