SW-CTL (Switch Control)
The Switch Control resides on the MSSNET (Mass Storage System and Network
Control) circuit pack (UN332) . The Mass Storage System Host Adapter (HA) also
resides on the MSSNET circuit pack. Systems equipp ed with the Standard
Reliability configuration have a sing le MSSNET circuit pack and systems
equipped wi th the High Reliability or Critical Reliabi lity configuration have two
MSSNET circuit packs, one in each Switch Processing Element (SPE) complex.
The MSSNET c ann ot be repl ace d in a syst em wit h one SPE comp lex witho ut
brin ging the syste m do wn. The MSSNET in the st and by SPE o f a sys tem
equipped wi th the High Reliability or Critical Reliabi lity option can be rep laced
without affecting normal system op eration.
The Switch Control sends control information b etween the SPE and port circuit
packs on the Processor Port Network (PPN) as shown in Figure 9-91. This control
information is sent via the PPN cabinet’s TDM (Time Division Multiplexed ) bus.
The portion of the TDM bus used to transmit c ontrol messages is called the
control channel. The control channel c an be on either TDM bus A or TDM bus B,
but only one of the two buses is used for the control channel at any give time.
The Switch Control is involved in sending c ontrol channel messages for the se tup
and takedown of all calls inv olving endpoints c onnected to the PPN, but is not
involved in the voice or da ta transmission that takes place d uring established
calls. The Switch Control is also involved in setting up system links used for
control of calls involving end points connec ted to Expansion Port Networks
(EPNs). Once those links are set up at system boot time, a failure of the Switch
Control will not affect existing calls or new calls involving those EPN endpoi nts.
One of the functions of the Switch Control is to detec t when port circ uit packs are
plugged into o r removed from the PPN cabinet. The Switch Control also monitors
the health of the control channel on the PPN cabinet TDM bus and informs the
SPE when errors occur.

2. After a spontaneous SP E interchange has occurred, the Alarm Log retains for three hours a
record of any MAJOR ON-BOARD alarm ag ainst an SPE component that took pla ce before
the interchange. If a spontaneous interchange has occurred (as indic ated by STBY-SPE
error type 103 or the display initcauses screen), and such an alarm is logged against
SW-CTL, then replace the standby MSSNET circuit p ac k using the "lock-and -p ower-down"
procedure described in Chapter 5.
