lower left corner of the cab inet. Should anything go wrong with the battery or
charger, they must be rep laced using the p rocedure describ ed in the ‘‘Replacing
the Battery and Battery Charger’’ section below. The system wi ll detect one of the
following three problems with the b atteries or charger:
Reserve Fault: the charger has detected a problem within itself or the
batteries and has notified th e system.
High Charge Rate: the batteries have b een charging at a hig h charge rate
for an excessively long peri od of time. This indicates that there is a short in
the batteries or the charger.
Prepare to Disconnect (Low Battery): the b atteries are in danger of be ing
drained to a point where the batteries would be damaged. This warning
often occurs after multiple p ower failures.
The batteries take 30 hours to fully charge afte r being drained . A fully
charged b attery pack should b ridge two power failures wit hout causing a
low battery warning to oc cur.
Replacing the Battery and Battery Charger (J58890CE)
1. Move the power switch on the batte ry charger to OFF.
!WARNING:

Always turn off the battery charg er before replacing the b atteries.

Failure to do so will result in damage to the 397C b attery charger.

2. Disconnect the cord from the outlet on the front of the battery charg er.
3. Remove the screw at the top left of the cover and open the cover to
access the charg er.
4. Check the battery voltage s at the test points. Check all 3 batteries wired in
series (the voltage should b e 144 volts, 3 X 48 volts = 144 volts) .
NOTE:
An ordinary voltmeter can be used to check b attery voltages at the
test points, but it may not prod uce valid results. If the batter y voltage
readings are below 48 volts ( the voltages at test points should read
144 volts, 3 x 48 volts = 144 volts), the batt ery is probably def ective.
However, a normal voltage reading does not necessarily mean the
battery is good; und er load, a defect ive battery with a normal
reading on the voltmeter may d ischarge rapid ly.
5. Check the battery dat es and the preventive maintenance lo g. Replace the
batteries if they are more than 2.5 years-old.
