As shown in Figure 1-7, all maint enanc e cap abil ities for th e stand by SPE a re bui lt
upon these three strategies.
Figure 1-7. Components of Standby Maintenance
Stand by SPE mai ntena nce so ftware is de sign ed to a ttemp t to se lf-co rrec t
problems. If a problem occurs, this software automatically tries to ad dress the
problem, bring the standby SPE back to a state of availability and clear all alarms
which might have been rais ed. Typically, if a standby SPE problem has not
cleared, it is of a hardware nature and some type of hardware compone nt
maintenance or replacement ac tion is indicated. Onc e such corrections have
been made, the sys tem sof tware w ill aut omati cally bring the st andb y SPE bac k to
full availability. There is no management terminal command to stimulate refresh of
standby SPE memory; system software automatically acc omplishes this itself
when conditions are app ropriate. The same is true of efforts to turn on shadowing
where no explicit user interface command to turn on/off shadowing is available
(note that busyout/release, below, can be used to indirectly accomplish this).
Standby Maintenance Monitor Software
The Standby Maintenance Monitor (SMM) is a software pac kage that is
always
running on key components of the standby SPE to v erify i ts co mpet ence. SMM
tests indiv idua l stand by SPE c omponents and reports back to the ac tive SPE, by
the handshake message, any failures of in dividual tests. Failure reports trigg er
