Circuit Packs That Use the Packet Bus
This section describes the circuit packs th at use the packet bus and the effects
of circuit pack an d bus failures on each other.
Seven circuit packs c an use the packet bu s: The maintenance objects p ertaining
to each circuit p ack, (describ ed further in Chapter 9), are listed in brackets.
TN1655 Packet Interface [PKT-INTF] provides the SPE interface to the
packet bus (as the UN332 MSSNET does to the TDM Bus). All traffic on
the packet bus passes through the Packet Interface. The Packet Interface
can detect some c ontrol lead failures and many data lead failures via
parity errors on received data.
TN570 Expansion Interface [EXP-IN TF] c onnec ts th e Port Netwo rks
(PNs) in the system. (Only TN570s can be used in Release 5r). All Packet
traffic between PNs passes through a p air of TN570s (one in each port
network). The Expansion Interface can d etect some control lead failures,
and many data lead failures via p arity errors on received d ata.
TN556, TN2198, and TN2208 ISDN-BRI circuit packs [BRI-BD,
BRI-PORT, ABRI-PORT, BRI-SET, BRI-DAT, ASAI-ADJ] carries signaling
information for ISDN-BRI station sets and data modules, as well as
sign aling info rmat ion an d ASAI messa ges betw een th e SPE and an ASAI
adjunct. The ISDN-BRI circuit pack ha s the same fault detection
capabilities as the TN570 Expansion Inter face.
TN577 Packet Gateway circuit pack [PG ATE-BD, PGATE-PT] pro vid es
X.25 connectivity to supp ort external system adjuncts suc h as Audix®
and DCS. The packet bus carries b oth signaling and c ustomer traffic. The
Packet Gateway circuit pac k has the same fault detection c apabilities as
the TN570 Expansion Interface.
TN553 Packet Data circuit pack [PDATA-BD, PDATA-PT] connects via a
backplane c able to a TN726B Data Line circuit p ack in an adjac ent carrier
slot. Together, the two circuit packs p erform a protocol c onversion from
mode 3 pac ket bus t raffi c ori gin ating in t he SPE to m ode 2 TDM Bu s tra ffic
destined for external system d evices and adjunc ts. This connectivity is
referred to as a

System Port

. System Ports support devic es and adjuncts
such as the System Printer, the PMS Journal Printer, the PMS Wakeup Log
Printer, data terminals, remote administration terminals, and equipment to
support the Call Detail Record ing (CDR) feature. System Ports are also
used for saving and restoring System Announcements. The packet b us
carries both signaling and data for the Packet Data circ uit pack. The
Packet Data circuit pac k has the same fault detection c apabilities as the
TN570 Expansion Interface.
