Simplex SPE
When a s ystem resta rt oc curs on a sy stem w ith si mple x (SPE) wi th the
corresponding v ector bit set, the core d ump is written to the primary MSS device.
Once the core dump is written, the vector is cleared and the restart is performed.
When a WARM restart (reset system 1) is performed and the vector is set for
WARM restarts, a COLDII is executed after the WARM restart in order to recover
the packet interface c ircuit pack. Packet in terface recovery is neces sary due to
delays of writing the core dump.
Duplicated SPE Options
Feature Interactions
In a simplex SPE system, service will be disrup ted while a core dump is being
written to the primary Mass Storage System devic e. In addition, service wi ll
continue to be disrup ted until the software is restarted at an appropriate level.
These “disruption” times wi ll vary depending upon the particular switch
configuration.
If a core dump file alread y exists, a subsequent core d ump will overwrite it.
If the disk is not accessib le, a core dump c annot be executed.
spe-active The active SPE will perform a core dump. When a WARM restart (reset
system 1) is performed and the vector is set for WARM restarts, a COLDII
is executed after the WARM restart in order to recover the packet
interface circuit p ack. This packet interfac e recovery is necessary d ue to
the delays of writing the c ore dump
spe-standby The standby SPE will perform a core dump after its memory has been
refreshed. When a WARM restart (reset system 1) is performed and the
vector is set for WARM restarts, a COLDII is executed after the WARM
restart in order to recover the packet interfac e circuit pack. This pac ket
interface recovery is neces sary due to the delays of refreshing the
standby processor.
spe-maint The sta ndb y SPE will perf orm a c ore d ump witho ut ref reshi ng it s memo ry
first. This option is the default on a dup licated system.
spe-smm The standby SPE will perform a core dump. This allows a dump of the
Standby Maintenance Monitor (SMM) when the stand by SPE is
experiencing p roblems. If an interchange o ccurs after the standb y
(spe -smm) SPE vect or has been set, a core dump will not b e per forme d
on either the new active SPE or the new standby SPE regardless of the
level of restart that occurs. However, if a nother interchange occ urs
makin g the new ac tive SPE the sta ndb y SPE onc e aga in, a c ore d ump on
the standby SPE will occur if the standby restarts at the appropriate level.
