9-202ATM-EI (Expansion Interface Circuit Pack)
9
This test places the ATM circuit pack in ATM framer looparound mode. Once the
board receives this messag e, it creates a dummy virtual c ircuit that originates
and ends on the same board , without leaving the board. This test verifies both
the TDM path and the Packet Path. If the TDM test path passes, th en the packet
path is tested. Definitions of eac h test path are:
The circuit (TDM) path
: one of the tone generators sends a b it pattern is
through a TDM bus time slot to the ATM framer. The pattern is converted
into ATM cells and looped bac k to the ATM-EI board, which converts the
cell back into the b it pattern and puts it on a pre-determined time s lot. A
tone detector tests for the b it pattern and reports the t est result. This test
verifies that a large portion of the ATM-EIs circuit pat hs are functioning
correctly. Figure 9-7 shows a d iagram of the test.

Packet path
: the Packet Interface circui t pack sends p acket data to the
ATM framer interface, where it is mapped into ATM cells and then loop ed
around internally. The cells are converted b ack to packet d ata after it has
been looped. This por tion of the test verifies correct op eration of the
ATM-EI’s Packet bus interface and a large port ion of the ATM-EI's packet
paths. Figure 9- 8 shows the packet swi tched signal p ath for the ATM
circuit pack.
This test verifies the operation of a large por tion of the ATM-EI circuit and
packet paths, b ut does not verify the optical portion of the lightwave
transceiver. If this test passes, the ATM-EI circuit pac k is functioning
correctly, but faults may exist in the lightwave tra nsceiver. If the test fails,
the fault may lie on the board. After the test results are rep orted, the ATM
framer is taken out of loopbac k.
NOTE:
This test may be run on active or standb y ATM-EIs, but it is
not
allowed if an ATM-EI is the Expansion Archangel.
