Data Applications and System Port Connectivity

As part of each data ap plication, the SPE connects itself to the app lication

device through a system p ort. The application devic e may be an external

terminal, printer, or data-mod ule, or it may be circuitry internal to the s witch, as is

the case for the Announcement Circ uit pack data-module used to save and

restore recorded announcements. The fig ure below is an example of a system

port connection usin g a second Data Line circ uit pack (DAT-LN-BD) port to

provide dial-in ac cess for a remote terminal.

A feature may not have a permanent connec tion to a system port. For example,

the announcement feature uses the system por t when it is saving or restoring

announcement data to or from the Mass Storage System. The rest of the time it

does not use a system port. This makes troubleshooti ng these links more difficult,

since the symptoms may ap pear on one side of the link while the prob lem is on

the other. If the link is no longer up, there is no way to determine which system

port experienced the problem.
